Select any literary text and justify why it shouldn’t circulate in the Ugandan public sphere. Refer closely to the anti-pornography act 2014 MBABAZI MARVIS
The anti-pornography bill was passed by the parliament of Uganda in 2011 was signed by his excellence Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on the 18th FEB 2014. The bill seeks to create the offence of pornography which is blamed for sexual crimes against women and children including rape , child molestation and incest.
In the bill , pornography is defined as any representation , through publication, exhibition, cinematography, indecent show, information technology or by whatever means of a person engaged in real or stimulated explicit sexual activities or any representation of sexual parts of a person for primarily sexual excitement.
Pornography can also be defined as means of any culture practice radio or television program , writing, publication ,advertising, broadcast upload on internet, display, entertainment ,music ,dance, picture, audio or video recording , show ,exhibition or any combination of the proceeding that depicts a person engaged in explicit sexual activities or conduct.
With reference to the anti-pornography act of 2014, the movie “chocolate city “ should not circulate in the Ugandan public sphere. In the movie , the music is hot , the mood is magical and the exotic male dancers are simply delicious. Women go wild as these toned talented man make fantasies come true and the arrival of a young new exotic dancer (Robert Richard ) has the spot sizzling like never before.
At home he is Michael, an inner city college student, struggling to help his another ( Vivila A-Fox ) make ends meet. However his part time job does not pay bills, Michael begins to find success at a night club dancing as sexy chocolate. As pressure of being a female club goes favorite flavor while hiding his new job from his mother and girlfriend.
The movie’s genre is drama and Joan Claude La Marrie is the director. It is a new movie which was released in June 2015 thus not much has been said about it.
The movie, demeans Ugandan culture and thus it should not be circulated to public. The movie portrays male exotic dancers who expose their bodies to entertain woman.
In Ugandan context private parts of a person should be private and only exposed to those they are married to . this is contrally to the move where men entertain women by exposing their bodies to them. This is pornographic basing on the definition of pornography as any combination of the proceeding that depicts a person engaged in explicit sexual activities or conduct. Therefore for culture’s sake this material should not circulate in the Uganda public.
The move also causes psychological impact to the viewers. This in a long run could cause or increase cases of rape defilement and child molestation or incest among children, families and communities in Uganda. The music played , the dance moves and the nature of the bodies of the male exotic dancers is so seductive in that if make woman go wild and jump on stage to attack dancers like hungry lions. To the viewers , it creates those unreal expectation of what a sexy man should look like especially to women and also arouses sexual feelings of the viewers. This could result into cases mentioned above which are obviously dangerous to the Ugandan public.
The movie like chocolate city make viewers addictive to pornographic movies which in a long run could lead to sexual immorality to the community like Uganda. The movie like mentioned above portrays images of half naked man dancing in a seductive way to the viewers and thus persuade the viewer to engage themselves in sexual immorality which is dangerous to the Ugandan community for example married man and women would always want to have sex all the time or watch such scenes which could lead to rape of women, and marriage breaks up.
These are all not good to the Ugandan public.
Furthermore , the movie gives sex a different image in the Uganda context, sex should be secretive and between married couples. However in the movie, sex is portrayed as woman ump on the stage at the sight of the male exotic dancers and all they want is to feel or touch their bodies. Men make women want them through different moves. This makes women ‘s fanaticizes seem so real on the stage and thus shower all the money they possibly can to the male dancers. Basing on this if such movies are allowed to circulate in Uganda, sex would lose its initial purpose. People will have sex anywhere and would sex for entertainment which is thus dangerous like causing cases of rape and defilement.
The movie also gives a different view on how to make money. In the movie, the young man Michael has a normal job but it cannot pay his bills. However the job of exotic dancing pays him a large amount of money . this job is pornographic. Therefore if such movies are allowed to circulate in Uganda , the young youth will be motivated to make money out of pornographic activities like exotic dancing which in a long run will lead to high rates of sexual immorality in the country.
Furthermore, the movie like chocolate city attacks home and destroys marriages by creating unreal expectations that will make developing a good marriage impossible. Characters in the movie are adults youths, men and women. Women mostly are the ones mostly entertained in the movie. They watch and are excited about men’s gorgeous bodies. This however is dangerous as far as marriages are concerned. Women are affected in a way that they will begin to fantasize about good looking men as the only men that can make them happy, even in marriage which is a wrong perception in real sense. This could lead to marriage breaks up in the Uganda public.
According to the anti-pornography act, circulation of pornographic materials is a crime thus to any Uganda I would not allow circulation of such movies like chocolate city . according to bill no.12, a person who produces or participates in production of or traffic in or publishes or broadcasts or produces or import or exports in any way abets pornography. Contrary to section (i) commit an offence and is liable an conviction to a fine not exceeding five hundred currency points or imprisonment not exceeding ten years or both basing on this law I would not recommend other circulation of pornographic material in the Ugandan public.
Conclusively, the anti-pornography bill which was passed seeks to create the offence of pornography which has become an insidious problem. It is thus prohibited because of the dangers it passes to individuals, families and communities for example it fuels sexual crimes against women and children which includes rape, incest, child molestation and those discussed in the essay above.
Basing on the bill and the dangers of pornography to society movies such as “CHOCOLATE CITY” shouldn’t circulate to the public of Uganda as discussed in the essay above。
